About Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh

A Malaysian founder whose company has funded health outreach, meals and children’s welfare through partners on the ground.

From enterprise systems to a company of his own

Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh began his career inside large technology organisations. Digital News Asia reported that he worked at Intel and Hewlett-Packard in the United States, where he built deep technical skills, before joining Accenture in Malaysia and learning to turn that knowledge into solutions for business clients.

He founded Fusionex in 2005. Malay Mail later noted that the company grew without angel investors or venture capital, funded instead by revenue from customers, and that in the first six months Teh wrote the software foundation himself while talking to prospective clients about what they actually needed.

Fusionex and public recognition

Digital News Asia was already describing Fusionex as arguably Malaysia’s top big data company, with a team of about 400, when in 2014 Teh was named Technology Entrepreneur of the Year at the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Malaysia awards, judged by an independent panel.

Analyst attention followed. In an IDC MarketScape assessment of Asia Pacific big data and analytics platforms published in November 2017, Fusionex was rated a Major Player and was the only company of ASEAN origin in the report. MATRADE has also listed the company as a holder of MDEC Global Acceleration and Innovation Network status.

Why giving sits beside the business

Teh’s public remarks about giving are modest in tone. When Fusionex backed the Rotary wellness outreach, he encouraged the public to make full use of the free tests and awareness sessions. On the Assunta Children Society donation, he described children as the future of Malaysia and called the company’s role a small one.

Accepting the Paul Harris Fellow award, he paid tribute to the Rotary Foundation’s work against disease, for clean water and for learning programmes around the world, and spoke of doing his part as a global citizen.
